Newcastle Greens will launch our Election campaign with a focus on air quality

Stand up for what matters' is the Green Party's campaigning slogan in the coming General Election and to launch the campaign, candidates and supporters will attend a PRESS EVENT at 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday 9th May under the title:

STAND UP FOR CLEAN AIR

The event will be held on the footbridge between Ellison Place and the new Northumbria City Campus East, to highlight traffic driven air pollution in our, and many other cities, throughout the U.K. As the traffic on the Central Motorway beneath us will demonstrate, we have to take action on pollution.

• 40,000 premature deaths each year
• The country's Nitrogen Dioxide limit was breached within 2 weeks of the start of 2017
• Cost of motoring, including purchase of a vehicle DOWN 20% since 1980
• Rail fares UP 63%
• Bus and coach fares UP 64%

The Government has done its utmost to avoid its responsibilities under current legislation, having to be dragged kicking and screaming through the Courts which have finally ordered that a proper plan be published.

Green Party Co-Leader Caroline Lucas said, “Any air quality plan that does not at least meet the standards and proposals of the Green Party is not worthy of its name. The Government's catastrophic failure on air pollution reveals a Government shirking its responsibilities. Half measures are not good enough, we need bold action now.”
