Solidarity with Defend Dewley Hill Campaign

We were out with the Dewley Hill campaigners on Friday evening. A lovely walk (if rather wet and soggy towards the end!) through lots of arable land which will be lost for ever if this opencast mine is allowed to go ahead. We need food not coal! Dewley Hill campaigners have a brilliant banner - COAL IS OUR HERITAGE NOT OUR FUTURE- too right!

What is Dewley Hill?

Banks Mining have put in a planning application to create an open cast mine on the outskirts of Newcastle.

They have plans to extract 800,000 tonnes of coal and 400,000 tonnes of fireclay from fields between Throckley, Walbottle, Chapel Park and Heddon on the Wall. On the doorstep of the biggest city in the North East of England, we are going to see an environmental catastrophe.

How does this fit in with Newcastle declaring a Climate Emergency?
