Alistair Ford – Green Party Candidate for Newcastle upon Tyne North
I am standing for the Green Party because I believe that we are the only party to have real joined-up policies to address the huge issues we face in Newcastle and across the planet. The latest IPCC report on the impacts of climate change, the air pollution crisis, the need to protect the most vulnerable in society, finding new ways of providing work and livelihoods, and ensuring Newcastle is a healthy, happy, green place for future generations are all things that the Green Party policies would tackle.
I feel strongly that we need a new direction in politics and new voices in parliament. As a scientist working at Newcastle University, I see the need for investment in education and research for the new green economy, and to protect our country and our city from a disastrous Hard Brexit.
The Green Party’s policies on climate change and air pollution offer joined-up solutions to looming catastrophes, through progressive ideas on transport, housing, energy, and waste. We are the only party thinking seriously about the future of employment in an age of increasing job insecurity, with ideas like the Universal Basic Income gathering momentum and support. I am passionate about giving the people of Newcastle North a chance to vote for a Green future.

We were out with the Dewley Hill campaigners on Friday evening. A lovely walk (if rather wet and soggy towards the end!) through lots of arable land which will be lost for ever if this opencast mine is allowed to go ahead. We need food not coal! Dewley Hill campaigners have a brilliant banner – […]
After Newcastle Council declared a climate emergency, we have been asking whats next. Today, Council Leader Nick Forbes pledged that the council should reveal the climate change impact of every big decision they make. He wants every decision to be assessed against the pledge to make the city carbon neutral by 2030. Currently items sent […]
Last night our campaigner Tay Pitman questioned Newcastle City Council about progress following their #ClimateEmergency declaration back in April. She told them they needed to show “tangible evidence” that the Council’s promise to become carbon neutral by 2030 was not just hot air. Cllr Nick Kemp thanked her for a “detailed & informative” presentation and […]
Today as thousands gather in London to lobby MPs to tell government #TheTimeIsNow to act to halt climate change, here in Newcastle our camapaigner Tay Pitman will question Newcastle Council’s meeting this evening about whether any progress has been made towards a new Climate Action Plan. In April they declared a Climate Emergency with a […]
At the YouthStrike4ClimateNewcastle yesterday we heard the young people report back on their response from Newcastle Council following the youth strikers writing to ask what was now being done about the climate emergency declaration made in April, including stopping a proposed new coal mine near Throckley. Like these young folks, we are very disappointed by […]
Local Green campaigner Clare Andrews spoke to #bbcpoliticsnorth this morning about the costs we’ll face – particularly our poorest – if councils fail to act swiftly to tackle the Climate Emergency to bring warmer homes, less stressful commutes, clean air & greenspace to relax and play in – all good for our health and wellbeing […]
Good day spent by our volunteers talking to Newcastle residents about the issues that affect their neighbourhood. Thanks to everyone we spoke to for sharing their views! You can get in touch with us anytime about issues affecting your community, or if you’d like to get involved to help improve life for everyone. Or just […]
Air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from growing traffic are causing major and long-lasting damage to our health, as well as to our economy. The Royal College of Physicians (RCP) reported that exposure to outdoor air pollution is responsible for around 40,000 deaths in the UK each year. Health problems resulting from exposure to air […]
While the Swedish invent the word ‘flight-shame’ (flygskam) and see reductions in domestic flying, here in the UK our local and national governments support airport expansion at Heathrow and regionally – So much for declaring a climate emergency! We opposed this ‘vision’ for expansion in the last round of consultation and will continue to do […]
