Green Party announces its Newcastle candidates

The Newcastle upon Tyne Green Party has selected its parliamentary candidates for the 2017 general election. Once again the party will stand in all three of Newcastle’s constituencies, with Alison Whalley the candidate for Newcastle upon Tyne North, Peter Thomson standing for Newcastle upon Tyne Central and Alistair Ford, standing as a parliamentary candidate for the first time, in Newcastle upon Tyne East.

Greens welcome Council U-turn on Bedding Ban

On Monday night, Newcastle City Council's Cabinet approved a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) for the city. Provisions against begging, which would have targetted anyone sitting with bedding, were revised, following pressure from the local Green Party. In response to the changes, we have thanked the Council for reversing its proposed bedding ban, but continue to disagree with this clumsy attempt to deal with begging and psychoactive substances ('lethal highs') by further criminalisation.
