After a couple of weeks away our litter pickers were back in action last week around Todd's Nook. Unfortunately a combination of high winds and overflowing communal bins are not a good mix. This was the first time since we started where it felt we were not making progress but its not going to clear itself.

We also reported some fly-tipping which we are glad to say has now been cleared. Here are some before and after shots for you.

We didn't manage to venture far from Todd's nook, but 6 bags collected and a few bottles deposited into the recycling bins.

The Beyond Growth 2023 conference was a three-day event that took place in the European Parliament in Brussels this week. The conference brought together experts from different backgrounds to discuss and co-create policies for sustainable prosperity in Europe. The event focused on the environmental, social, and economic challenges we all face, rather than considering them separately.

You can see the talks here

How does the apply to Newcastle?

The Beyond Growth 2023 conference applies to us  in a number of ways. The conference highlighted the need to move away from the harmful focus on economic growth as the sole measure of societal progress. Newcastle can do this by focusing on other measures of progress, such as social well-being, environmental sustainability, and resilience.

Additionally, the conference explored a number of policy options for moving towards a post-growth economy. We could implement some of these policies, such as a new macroeconomic framework that would promote green and social investments, fight inequality, and allow redistribution. The city can also reform its economic models, which are based on outdated assumptions about growth and scarcity.

By applying the lessons of the Beyond Growth 2023 conference, Newcastle upon Tyne can build a more sustainable and prosperous future for its residents.

Newcastle Greens have set out their vision in the Greenprint for Newcastle. By taking these steps, Newcastle can become a leader in the global movement for a post-growth economy. Why not join us to help make the changes Newcastle needs?

Politics is about much more than party politics. It’s about community, about systems, about values and cooperation.
That said, forgive me for taking a moment to celebrate the group of people that have helped me find my feet on how to be effective in these systems: Newcastle Green Party.

If you’re watching the election results, and wondering how we did in Newcastle then in short: it’s going well!

We came second! 38% of the vote in Byker went Green. It’s been great to get to know even better my neighbours and members of the community across Byker. Although I didn’t win, the conversations I’ve had has given me lots of thoughts on how we can act right now. As Phill James always reminds me, we don’t need to be in power to use the power you have, and there is so many strengths, talents and stories across the ward to learn from.

With nearly 10% of all votes in Newcastle going Green, there’s much hope for the future. Well done to my friends in South Tyneside Green Party & Darlington Borough Greens for the fantastic gains they made there. It goes to show that the more people sees Greens elected, the more they want to see Greens be elected. Particular congratulations to Shirley Ford, formerly our regional coordinator and forever an all-round powerhouse. Shirley will make such a brilliant councillor I have no doubt!

It’s been such a pleasure working with Phill, Pat Mcgee, Idwal John, Andrew Gray, Anna Foster, Tim Dowson, Tony Waterston, Frances Hinton and our new members who live in Byker and joined because of our campaign.

Congratulations too to Newcastle Labour’s council leader Nick Kemp for holding the seat. I appreciate his comments to the Chronicle today on how the Labour Party will listen and reflect on the results across the city. This is a sign of hope too. We need more Greens, but we also need a diversity of views in our council chamber. To get things done with proper representation we need to all find ways of working together. And yes, a fairer voting system would help a lot here Make Votes Matter.
The work of course continues but it is time now for a few days of rest and reflection.

Thank you again Byker!

Nick Hartley

In the recent local elections, the Newcastle Green Party made significant strides in gaining support from voters across the city. From Byker to Wingrove, Arthur’s Hill to Heaton, and Monument to Elswick, the Greens finished a strong second in many wards, demonstrating the party's growing influence in the city.
With 10% of the citywide votes going Green, it's evident that the people of Newcastle are eager for a more sustainable and community-oriented future. The Newcastle Green Party is committed to delivering on that promise, but we need your help to win in the next election.

The Green Party stands for fairness and equality. We will champion policies that tackle income inequality, support the most vulnerable members of our society, and address systemic issues like discrimination and poverty. By voting Green, you are supporting a party that prioritizes social justice and works tirelessly to create a more equitable Newcastle.

The Newcastle Green Party has made remarkable progress in recent elections, but to continue our journey towards a greener and more just city, we need your support in the next election. By voting Green, you are choosing a brighter, more sustainable, and compassionate future for Newcastle.

Together, we can make a difference. Help us win in the next election – vote Green.

The cost of living has been rising faster than it has for decades at a time when many are struggling more than ever. In the last year, gas prices have risen by 28% and electricity by 19%, and that’s before the recent price rises came into effect on April 1st. Food prices are rising, Metro fares and council tax have just risen and house prices are rising steadily. Despite the increased costs that we’re all facing, wages haven’t increased in line with the increased cost of living.

As ever, it’s those on the lowest incomes who will bear the brunt of the price rises. They spend a higher proportion of their income on essentials like food, fuel and energy, but they’ve got the least leeway to be able to cope with these rises. Next year, it’s estimated that an extra 1.3 million people will fall into absolute poverty, including half a million children. More people than ever will have to choose between heating and eating.

The anxiety and stress caused by these rises will have a profound effect; people’s mental health will suffer and existing physical health conditions will be exacerbated. If people are forced to go hungry or not put their heating on when it’s needed, their health will be affected. The poorest and most vulnerable in our society will suffer disproportionately.

It’s imperative that the government put sufficient effort into tackling the cost of living crisis as they’re neglecting those who are most at risk. They have a range of options available to them to help those who need it, such as protecting the poorest by upgrading benefits and increasing taxes for the highest earners. Implementing the Green Party to introduce Universal Basic Income to every resident would lead to an increase in people’s quality of life. The Green Party would scrapy Universal Credit and the cruel sanctions regime, which pushes people further into poverty.

Poverty is a political choice. Only the Green Party has the policies and ambition to tackle poverty head-on and our approach is based on real social security. A guaranteed minimum income for every UK resident would transform all of our lives. For too long, the Conservative government has targeted and demonised people who face unemployment, disability and low incomes as the scapegoats of austerity. We need a government that protects the interests of everyone, not just the most privileged in society.

Green Party campaigner Tay Pitman spoke at Saturday’s ‘Cost of Living’ rally, which was held by The People’s Assembly at Grey’s Monument. She urged the government to address the cost of living crisis and take steps to ensure that nobody is pushed further into poverty.

She said “on May 5th, use your vote wisely and vote for those who will stand up for you and prioritise your needs, not those of big business and the elite”.
